SAN FRANCISCO -- Dan Uggla needed a fresh start. The San Francisco Giants needed a healthy second baseman who could step in and produce. Both are hoping they can solve each others problem. A week after being released by the Atlanta Braves and just days after signing a minor league deal with San Francisco, the Giants purchased Ugglas contract from Triple-A Fresno. They put him in the starting lineup for the opener of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. "I know what I bring to a clubhouse. I know what I can bring on the field, and Im just looking forward to going out there and having fun with the guys," Uggla said after slipping into his newly stitched No. 22 Giants uniform. "No added pressure here on my end. Ive been in some dark places and battled my own struggles the last year and a half. But thats over now. Im here to have fun." The Giants have had little production from their second basemen this season. Marco Scutaro and Ehire Adrianza were placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game. Scutaros strained lower back has kept him out for all but five games this season -- though the Giants are still hopeful he can come back -- and Adrianza has a strained right hamstring that is considered minor. As a result, the Giants signed Uggla to a minor league deal Monday. They also designated left-handed pitcher Jose De Paula and infielder Nick Noonan for assignment Friday to make room for Uggla and infielder Tony Abreu, who was also called up from Triple-A. Uggla went 2 for 7 with two walks and an RBI in two games for Fresno. Giants manager Bruce Bochy had hoped Uggla could play more in the minors before calling him up. The latest round of injuries just didnt allow it. Bochy said hes hoping Uggla can pull off a turnaround similar to the kind Pat Burrell and Jeff Francoeur did after signing with San Francisco in the middle of recent seasons. "Sometimes change is good," Bochy said. "We like taking a look at players who have a track record, and he has an outstanding track record. You look for them to be available, and really, the timing was perfect for us." Uggla will cost the Giants only $500,000. The Braves are responsible for the $18 million hes guaranteed over the rest of this season and next season. The 34-year-old second baseman has 233 career homers and a .244 average. He had five straight 30-homer seasons for the Marlins and Braves from 2007-11 and has made three NL All-Star teams. But since 2012, Uggla has hit just .196 with 43 homers and 143 RBIs in 1,101 at-bats. He said hes working on "staying short" in his swing instead of trying to hit home runs. "Were human. Were going to fall out of whack sometimes," Uggla said. "We have to get ourselves back into the right places some way or another. And for me, thats just trying to get the barrel to the ball and staying as short as I can." More than anything, Uggla is excited for another opportunity in the majors. He has some familiarity with his new teammates, playing with pitchers Tim Hudson in Atlanta and Yusmeiro Petit with the Marlins, but otherwise the Giants offer a clean slate. Uggla said he was excited to play in front of the nightly sellouts at AT&T Park. He compared the feelings before his debut with San Francisco to opening day. "Anytime you do have an opening day or a first game, thats kind of similar to the butterflies you get on opening day. Its a fresh start," he said. "Im excited about it. I got all the right nerves going, the anxious, excited-ness going. Im looking forward to getting it going." Dino Ciccarelli Jersey . Yes, his back was hurting again. His performance at the PGA Championship is becoming more the norm, as well. Once the games most dominant player, Woods looked old and tired at Valhalla. He was surely overmatched Friday, shooting his second straight 3-over 74 to miss the cut at one of golfs biggest events for only the fourth time in his professional career. Not that this was a big surprise. Woods was playing in only his fourth tournament since back surgery in late March, and he hasnt been a factor in any of them. He failed to make the cut at the Quicken Loans National. He had his worst 72-hole showing in a major at the British Open. He had to withdraw on the final day of the World Golf Championship at Firestone after taking an awkward swing and hurting his back again. He showed up Wednesday at Valhalla, proclaimed himself fit — and flopped again. "I tried as hard as I could. Thats about all Ive got," Woods said. "Unfortunately, I just didnt play well. Consequently, a pair of 74s is not very good." With the cut at 1 over, Woods wasnt even close to playing on the weekend. He was effectively done after shooting a 4-over 39 on the front nine, including a double bogey at No. 6 — where he three-putted from 18 feet — and a really ugly bogey at the par-5 seventh. He drove into a muddy bog far left of the fairway and had to punch out. He sailed his third shot over the green, and a sloppy chip came up short. Woods played better on the back side — a couple of birdies, a single bogey — but he was all done at that point. He said his chances effectively ended when the same problem that left him barely able to bend over at Firestone cropped up again on the driving range at Valhalla. "I was sore," Woods said. "There was no doubt I was sore. It went out on me on me on the range. I just had to play through it." There were no obvious indications of pain on the course, certainly nothing like his tortured departure from last weeks tournament.dddddddddddd He appeared to reach for his back a little after the errant tee shot on No. 7, but didnt actually touch it. There were plenty of grimaces, but those usually came after he hit another poor shot. Woods insisted he had the "same feeling, same pain, same spasms" that forced him to drop out at Firestone, though he was encouraged that it wasnt in the same spot as his back surgery. "It was telling me on the range that it probably wasnt a good idea (to play)," he said, referring to his back. "I couldnt make a back swing. I cant get the club back. Im coming through fine. I just cant get the club back. That throws everything off. I cant get anywhere near the positions Im accustomed to getting to. I just cant do it. I have to rely on my timing and my hands, and hope I time it just right." Hell not have plenty of time to work on his game and build up his strength. If he doesnt play next week at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, — and he never has — his season is over. Woods needed to win the PGA to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. It also seems highly unlikely that Woods will be one of the wild-card picks by U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson, who said over and over that he wanted to see some sign the 14-time major champion was rounding into form. Instead, Woods cant even beat the 64-year-old captain, finishing behind him at the British Open and three shots worse at the PGA. "I dont know," Woods said, when asked about his chances of being chosen by Watson. "He hasnt called." Might be best if he sits out this Ryder Cup. Woods conceded he needs to get stronger and more fit to have any chance of being close to the player he once was. "I felt like I wasnt that far away when I came back at the Quicken Loans," Woods said. "But obviously, the more I play, I cant develop my strength while playing a lot. I need to get back in the gym and get stronger." ___ Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www.twitter.com/pnewberry1963Cheap Bruins JerseysWholesale Sabres JerseysRed Wings Jerseys From ChinaWholesale Canadiens JerseysWholesale Lightning JerseysCheap Maple Leafs JerseysDiscount Hurricanes JerseysBlue Jackets Jerseys OutletAdidas Devils JerseysCheap Islanders JerseysRangers Jerseys From ChinaDiscount Flyers JerseysDiscount Penguins JerseysDiscount Capitals JerseysWholesale Blackhawks JerseysCheap Avalanche JerseysCheap Team USA Hockey JerseysCheap Stars JerseysWholesale Wild JerseysDiscount Predators JerseysDiscount Blues JerseysDiscount Ducks JerseysAdidas Coyotes JerseysFlames Jerseys OutletWholesale Oilers JerseysDiscount Sharks JerseysCheap Canucks JerseysGolden Knights Jerseys OutletAuthentic NHL Winter Classic Jerseys ' ' '
