SAN DIEGO -- Although Andy Green has been a major league manager only 109 games, he knows something about how special a major league debut is.Its a very exciting day for everyone, teammates as well as the player, said Green, who has had seven Padres make their major league debuts this season.Saturday night at Petco Park, however, Green will be in the other dugout as one of Philadelphias top prospects makes his major league debut for the Philadelphia Phillies.Right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson, who is considered among the top three prospects in the Phillies system, officially joined Philadelphia Thursday and was immediately designated to start Saturdays game by manager Pete Mackanin. We excited to see him here, Mackanin said of the 22-year-old, 6-foot-4, 225-pound Thompson, who many saw as the Phillies key acquisition on July 31, 2015, in the five-for-two trade that sent pitcher Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers.Thompson joins the Phillies on a hit streak. He is 8-0 over his last 11 starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley with a 1.21 earned run average over 74 1/3 innings pitched.Thompson has an overall record of 11-5 this season with a 2.50 earned run average in 21 starts at Triple-A.Originally signed as a second-round pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2012, Thompson has twice been the top prospect in a trade made by a contending team. The Tigers traded Thompson to the Rangers in 2014 for reliever Joakim Soria.Opposing Thompson for the Padres Saturday night will be right-hander Paul Clemens, who is 0-2 with the Padres with a 3.46 earned run average in six appearances since being claimed on waivers from the Miami Marlins on June 28.Clemens moved permanently into the rotation last Sunday to fill the spot vacated when Andrew Cashner was traded to the Marlins. We like his ceiling, Green said of the 28-year-old Clemens. His breaking ball plays in the major leagues. He can have success with what he has if he learns how to use it. Thus far, he hasnt been consistent. Thats the next step. From what weve seen in bullpens and at moments when hes pitched for us, his stuff plays. This is an opportunity. Like a lot of guys we have, this is an opportunity for Paul to show what he can do to stick up here.In his start last Sunday, Clemens allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He issued one walk and had five strikeouts. He also gave up his third homer in a total of 13 innings for the Padres. The other two homers came during his first start on July 20 in a spot start in the second game of a doubleheader in St. Louis. All five runs allowed by Clemens in his first two starts have come on home runs.Im not happy with that, said Clemens. Without the home runs, Ive had pretty good outings. I cant make good pitches and then make a bad pitch that burns me. You cant be successful that way. Kevin Faulk Youth Jersey . St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt has played down a verbal clash with a Western Bulldogs fan who touched him during Saturday nights AFL match at Etihad Stadium.Riewoldt reacted angrily after he was tapped on the shoulder during the fourth term of the game, turning around and directing a few terse words at the supporter.I just didnt expect to get touched. It caught me by surprise a little bit, Riewoldt told the Seven Network a day after his sides 15-point win.I dont think there was anything malicious or necessarily wrong with what occurred. But I just dont think we want it to become common that players and fans are touching each other.Hawthorn great Jason Dunstall agreed..ddddddddddddIt wasnt malicious but the problem is if we start allowing fans to touch players, we set a very dangerous precedent, Dunstall said during Fox Footys coverage of the match. And we know where that will probably end up, so we just cant have it.AFL icon Leigh Matthews suggested the league should remind fans to keep their hands off.Its not a hanging offence. Theres no need to suspend the guy from going to the footy, Matthews said on Seven. But I think a caution from head office - fans, dont touch players if they come near the fence. ' ' '
